Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural mesothelioma is also referred to as mesothelioma of the pleura. It is a tumor of the lining surrounding the lungs. The pleura iis a thin tissue that surrounds the lungs and surrounds the inside of the chest. To protect the lungs, the pleura produces a small
amount of fluid, helping to cushion the lungs and allowing the lungs to move more smoothly while breathing.
The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma can include back pain, pain in the rib cage, shortness of breath, chest pain, fluid build-up in the lung lining, hoarseness, muscle weakness, paralysis, coughing up blood, swelling of the face and arms, and sensory loss.
- Benign (Non-Cancerous) Pleural Mesothelioma
Benign pleural mesothelioma is a tumor that is non-cancerous and has not spread to other organs within the body. If the tumor is substantial, it can squeeze the lung itself, causing pain and shortness of breath.
- Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor and may spread to other organs. This form of cancer is found in the pleural sac lining that surrounds the lung. Exposure to asbestos is the primary cause of malignant pleural mesothelioma.
